Warehouse Design Consultancy for Global Leisure Brand
In this case study we deomonstrate how we set out the challenge, approach, actions and outcomes of a new DC design project for a globally recognised leisure qequipment brand.
The client ws in a precarious position with a soured relationship with a third-party logistics operator and needed fast results, and change delivered quickly.
CHALLENGE
Our client needed to open its own warehouse to manage the supply and control of it‘s products across their UK business. The client had to this point operated its logistics in partnership with a third party logistics operator. The third-party logistics operator had through its own poor solution choices created a high cost and poor service environment for our client.
We were tasked to design a new operating solution for the client that would deliver a robust and cost-effective working solution to meet the client’s current and future operating volumes and product ranges, as well as clear a backlog of customer demand that had built up due to the third-party operator’s poor performance.
APPROACH
Our approach was to ensure that the solution design choices made would create the most robust possible solution for the client. This meant ensuring that all necessary product data and customer demand challenges were fully captured and documented for inclusion within the design process.
In this case we also set about ensuring that the solution would be manageable without high levels of complexity as this was the first time this client had sought to operate its own warehousing facilities. Key to our approach was to ensure that the solution had adequate capacity to meet the demands its customers expected.
ACTIONS
We analysed in detail the customer’s true demands based upon our expert knowledge of what to look for to develop a robust solution design. We analysed inventories, SKU ranges, throughput levels, inbound and outbound supply characteristics.
We also reviewed client system requirements so that robust operating solution could be put in place to ensure that the client’s operations would be controlled, well managed and primed to succeed. We designed physical storage media layouts, organisation charts and headcounts, and developed processes and labour plans. We helped the client search and select a suitable location and identified what needed to be achieved to open the facility. We also costed the capital investment requirements to enable the site to be opened.
RESULTS
The project delivered a robust and manageable solution ready for implementation. The client was able to move forward with confidence with a clear understanding of how their solution would look in-situ what systems were needed to be developed and how many people they would need to recruit to manage the process.
Through our expert delivery of this project our client was then able to move forward and implement the solution precisely as designed with a cost budget within the forecast produced from our design.
